Swimmers

Walking up Wickenden on a sunny day, Coffee Exchange java in hand... Done it hundreds, probably thousands of times, but with Baby Daughters' hand in mine, her eyes wide and ready to explore, it's all fresh.

I've seen the the fish sculptures in the window of O' Cha plenty of times, but maybe I've never really seen them before. I point out the display and she gleams an enthusiastic "Wow Daddy!" It makes it more real. Suddenly I see it as she sees it. Colorful, vibrant, exciting because it's new.

Taking in color, sound, texture, smell–everything–we meander up to the pet shop on the corner, We step inside and ask her if she wants to pick out a fish. “Yup!” I hold her up to a small selection of Betas on a shelf. Without hesitation she picks the one with the most interesting coloring - spotted purple over silvery grey.

Back in the car I ask her what she wants to name her new friend. Again without hesitation: “Swimmers!”.

I wish I had such a clear idea about how things should be.

On the drive home, holding her little brother's hand, she says, “Daddy... I'm happy.” Me too kiddo, me too.
