By now I’m sure Movable Type users are all well aware of the comment spam epidemic that hit over the weekend. Many of us were forced to waste precious time deleting comments with links to some seriously hideous crap.
Aside from wishing cancer and famine on the bastards responsible for these attacks, I’m implementing a couple solutions:
Jay Allen’s MT-Blacklist - Just released yesterday, this is exciting and here’s hoping that it’s a strongly effective solution. I’m going to get this up and running ASAP.
Disable comments - Not the best or easiest solution nor one I really want to use, but decisively effective. Many of the suspect posts were made on archived entries. I’m going through and disabling comments on all the posts with ‘0’ comments and closing comment strings on those with a few. I don’t really want to do this, but realistically, if posts weren’t commented on when they were fresh it’s not likely they will ever will be and there’s no point to leaving an open window of opportunity. Hopefully MT-Blacklist will prove to be the answer and I’ll be able to reverse this in the future.
I just don’t know anymore. I’m really wondering if this might be absolutely true.
Comments are open on this post for the sake of discussing solutions only. Spammers will be personally introduced to my friend Louis.
