When you come to a stoplight stare at the bastard, fiery red against the grey sky. Listen to “Luau” by Drive Like Jehu – the end when the second guitar comes in and sears right through your head, ear to ear. Everything else turns black and white, like in Rumble Fish – but the red gets more intense. Stare at that sucker until it stares back. Zoom in on it – the dot pattern pulses in and out of focus. It looks like it wants to say something, like it has a message for you. Your eyes and ears burn, your head feels like a brick, nothing makes sense, time won’t move forward – the thick black wires overhead seem to be the only thing holding you and the light upright. If they were to let go...

Then it turns green, color washes back in, there’s a tingling like when you feel a headache start to subside, and you go.
