Search and Destroy :: Stooges
Hell yeah. Just had to get that out. I've got a whole Stooges thing going on lately.
The desktop images I promised the other day – now six in total – are available for the downloading. All desktops were designed at 1024 x 768. If a demand arises for larger or smaller sizes they will be added as well. Honestly though, I think it only enhances the images if they display a little fuzzy.
A few entries ago Jim asked why not dump the tables and go all CSS. A valid question indeed and the reason uploading the desktops was delayed. Much of yesterday and the night before were spent re-invigorating the quest for table free Motor Skills. The only way this site will go sans table is if/when I can make it display exactly as you see it now. Or at least very close. Healthy progress has been made to that end, but there are still drawbacks.
First, I haven't been able to get the header to display like it does now without using a table. I could conceivably live with one table in there, but it would feel more complete if I didn't have to. Second, when I float the left column, the text in the right column reflows into it's proper width, but in Gecko based browsers and Safari, the subtle boxes that separate each item still span the entire content area [screenshot]. Internet Explorer displays most of the boxes correctly but gaffs up the one surrounding the stylesheet switcher [screenshot]. For the life of me, I cant figure this one out. Hints from any CSS guru types who might happen to stop by would be more than welcome and greatly appreciated.
Interestingly, friend to Motor Skills and purveyor of the fine BMX sites eWire and New England Flatland, Kieran Chapman is currently tackling table free redesign issues as well.
Zeldman on favicons: "...once you get used to seeing .ico files, it becomes hard to do without them." We here at Motor Skills couldn't agree more. One of our favorite features of Safari is it's handling of these little suckers. So to those who are able to view it, we present the Motor Skills favicon (see the address bar). It's a little detail of the supercharger on an old dragster, much like the one at the top of this column – 'case you were wondering. Actually, I'm not sure I like it yet, might do something simpler later.
