Monday Skills

The lemonade was overpriced but delicious. Not too tart, not too sweet. It was the perfect compliment to the also overpriced but delicious sandwich, and the perfect refresher on a hot day in Rhode Island. Sitting there, eating good food, drinking good lemonade I felt calm, relaxed, almost eager to continue with the days work. This never happens on a Monday. Ever.

I checked the time as I finished the sandwich then glanced at my cup. It was time to go back to the office, but luckily half the lemonade was still left. Great. I could take my tasty drink and my relaxed feeling right back to my desk. All I had to do was throw away my trash and stack my tray.

I watched as the cup spiraled in slow motion towards the ground. The cover popped off and every drop of cool, soothing lemon based beverage seemed to pause for a split second, just long enough for me to think – maybe I can catch it, then splattered into the floor mat. Gone, all gone.

It was a total failure of grasping ability. For no apparent reason, my hand missed the signal from my brain and the cup just dropped. Suddenly really hot, twice as tense, full of despair and muttering profanity, I shuffled out of the cafe with no lemonade and no relaxation. I hate Monday.
